Jaguar has offered a first look at the interior of its upcoming £120,000 Type 01 electric Grand Tourer, a model intended to lead the brand's transformation into an ultra-premium electric vehicle manufacturer. The reveal comes nearly two months before the car's official world debut scheduled for October 6 in New York.
Images of the Type 01's minimalist cabin highlight a central spine running the length of the interior, a design feature Jaguar states emphasizes the car's longitudinal philosophy and creates four distinct seating areas. The cabin is engineered to create an enveloping feel for the driver, enhanced by a lower seating position than is typical in many electric vehicles. This lowered position is made possible by splitting the 120kWh battery pack beneath the floor, allowing the seats to be mounted lower and contributing to the car's relatively low roofline of 1.4 meters.
Instead of a conventional central touchscreen, the Type 01 incorporates a wide high-definition display that functions as both the instrument cluster and extends into the dashboard's center. A smaller digital screen is integrated into the central spine to manage climate control, air recirculation, and heated seat functions. Traditional buttons are absent, replaced by illuminated, flush-mounted controls on a twin-spoke steering wheel, used for navigating displays and activating voice commands.
The vehicle also features a 'Digital ClearSight Rear View Display', which streams footage from a roof-mounted camera, eliminating the need for a traditional rear window, a solution also seen in the Polestar 4. This display is integrated with the car's front soundbar, removing the need for door-mounted speakers.
Materials play a significant role in the interior design, with brass-inspired finishes on the central spine and door tops. The redesigned Jaguar leaper emblem is presented as a decorative element. The four individual seats feature broad backrests with a stitch-free panel design for enhanced comfort. The interior door panels appear to have electronic button releases instead of traditional handles.
Thomas Holden, Jaguar's chief interior designer, described the design philosophy as translating the vehicle's exterior presence into a distinctive interior architecture that emphasizes its longitudinal nature. Rawdon Glover, Jaguar's managing director, stated that the Type 01 is the first production model to embody the company's new creative philosophy, aiming for every journey to be an occasion.
The Type 01 will be powered by a three-motor setup, with one at the front and two at the rear, producing over 1,000 horsepower. The vehicle utilizes advanced torque vectoring technology, which monitors grip and wheel slip up to 1,000 times per second. The 120kWh battery is anticipated to provide an estimated range of around 430 miles on a single charge, with charging speeds of up to 350kW allowing for approximately 200 miles of range to be added in 15 minutes.
Jaguar, owned by India's Tata Motors, faces scrutiny with this rebrand. The company's recent 2024 brand campaign drew criticism, including from former U.S. President Donald Trump, who labeled it 'woke.' The Type 01 is scheduled for its full unveiling on October 6, with first UK deliveries expected in early 2027.
