Jadon Sancho Offered Career Respite by Spanish Club Getafe
The former Manchester United winger, a free agent since summer, has reportedly received a formal offer from Getafe.
Spanish club Getafe has reportedly made a formal offer to sign winger Jadon Sancho, a free agent since his departure from Manchester United in the summer. The 26-year-old, who last represented England in 2021, has been considering his future options, with his former club Borussia Dortmund also linked.
Getafe, who are competing in the Conference League this season, are hopeful of reaching an agreement for the player, though negotiations are expected to be complex. The club recently secured the services of another high-profile free agent, former Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal.
Sancho has been training diligently during his time without a club, sharing his routine on social media. In August, he was observed using the facilities of Flixton FC, a tenth-tier side in Greater Manchester. While considering his options, Sancho is understood to be favoring a move abroad.
Sancho joined Manchester United for £73 million from Dortmund in 2021. His tenure at Old Trafford became complicated following the appointment of Erik ten Hag the following year. By August 2023, Sancho was omitted from the matchday squad for a game against Arsenal after ten Hag cited his poor training performances. Sancho publicly disputed these claims on social media, stating he was being made a "scapegoat." This led to his banishment from the first team by ten Hag after he refused to apologize.
He subsequently returned to Dortmund on loan in January 2024. Further temporary spells followed at Chelsea during the 2024-25 season and Aston Villa for the 2025-26 campaign, prior to his release as a free agent this summer. Chelsea had an obligation to buy Sancho at the end of his loan spell but paid a £5 million penalty to opt out of the agreement. During his time at Aston Villa in the 2025-26 season, Sancho scored one goal and provided three assists, helping the team win the Europa League and secure a fourth-place finish in the Premier League.
This potential move by Getafe echoes their previous decision to sign Manchester United exile Mason Greenwood on loan in 2023. Greenwood, who had been arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior before the charges were dropped, denied any wrongdoing. He had a successful loan spell at Getafe, winning the club's Player of the Year award with ten goals, before transferring to Marseille for £26.6 million.
