Jack Whitehall Recalls Botched Harry Potter Audition

Jack Whitehall, 38, has shared that he "tanked" an audition for the role of Harry Potter as a child, much to his father Michael Whitehall's disappointment. Michael Whitehall, a well-known agent and producer, leveraged his industry connections to secure his son a private audition with a casting director.

Whitehall explained on Capital Breakfast that he had not read the Harry Potter books before the audition. When questioned by the casting director, he attempted to bluff his way through by discussing "Orcs and stuff," only to be told he was thinking of the wrong book. "They were like, ‘that's the wrong book, mate,’ and absolutely tanked the audition," Whitehall recalled.

He added that his father was "bitterly disappointed" by the outcome, seeing it as an "abused" opportunity. Whitehall contrasted his failure with the success of others, noting that Emma Watson was cast as Hermione Granger through an open casting call at schools.

Daniel Radcliffe ultimately portrayed Harry Potter in the film series. A new HBO Max series based on J.K. Rowling's novels is also in development, with Scottish actor Dominic McLaughlin set to play the boy wizard. The upcoming series has faced controversy, with some activists calling for boycotts due to Rowling's public statements on women's rights. Rowling serves as an executive producer on the show.

Whitehall recently married model Roxy Horner in April. The couple, who began dating in 2020, welcomed their daughter Elsie in September 2023.
