Jack Dorsey's $32 Million San Francisco Compound Renovation Enters 14th Year, Irritating Neighbors

For nearly 14 years, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has been engaged in an extensive renovation of his $32 million San Francisco estate, a project that has transformed the affluent Sea Cliff neighborhood into a perpetual construction site and reportedly frustrated his wealthy neighbors.

The tech mogul's two adjoining properties, situated on 1.21 acres overlooking the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge, have been the subject of ongoing construction since Dorsey purchased the first parcel in February 2012 for $9.99 million. The initial property, a 3,734-square-foot modernist residence built in 1965, has undergone significant modifications, including seismic upgrades, expanded living space, rooftop gardens, and a complex sauna and plunge pool facility.

Dorsey expanded his real estate holdings in November 2018 by acquiring the neighboring property for $21.9 million, bringing his total acquisition cost to approximately $31.9 million. This second residence, a five-bedroom, 3,588-square-foot home on 0.62 acres, has also seen permits filed for renovations, though the properties are not indicated to be combined into a single structure.

City records reveal a complex permitting history, with major redevelopment applications submitted in 2013 and subsequent updates in 2020 and beyond addressing various aspects of the properties. These include plans for solar panels, landscaping, fire sprinkler systems, retaining walls, an underground water tank, and elaborate features like a hot tub overlooking the ocean, a steam room, and a cold plunge pool. Architectural designs depict a coastal sanctuary with vegetation-covered roofs, reclaimed redwood siding, and extensive stonework.

The prolonged construction has contributed to a broader trend of extensive renovation in the exclusive Sea Cliff neighborhood. According to planning documents, at least 24 homes along El Camino del Mar have filed building permits since the beginning of 2025. This surge in construction activity has resulted in the presence of scaffolding, sidewalk-occupied construction crews, and heavy equipment operating outside numerous properties.

Neighbors have expressed frustration over the persistent noise and disruption. "I’ve been listening to 24-7 construction noise in the distance for years now," one anonymous local told The Post. "One day it will end. I hope."

Dorsey's extensive property consolidation and renovation efforts echo those of other tech leaders, such as Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg in Lake Tahoe and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco, who have also acquired and developed multiple adjoining properties.

San Francisco’s exclusive Sea Cliff neighborhood is home to some of the city’s wealthiest residents.

Sea Cliff, known for its affluent residents including the late Robin Williams and actress Sharon Stone, as well as Salesforce co-founder Marc Benioff and investor Tom Steyer, has become a hub for significant real estate development, with the ongoing construction contributing to a noticeable shift in the neighborhood's atmosphere.
