Jack Antonoff Criticizes Ed Sheeran for Removing Macklemore From Tour
Producer argues Sheeran missed a chance to defy billionaires by canceling tour dates over Macklemore's pro-Palestine remarks.
Grammy-winning producer Jack Antonoff has criticized singer Ed Sheeran for removing rapper Macklemore from his tour lineup following Macklemore's pro-Palestine statements. Antonoff, known for his work with artists like Taylor Swift, stated in a recent interview that Sheeran missed a "massive, beautiful opportunity" to "stand the f--- up" against billionaire interests.
Macklemore's removal from Sheeran's Loop Tour occurred after the rapper voiced support for Palestine during his opening act. Antonoff suggested that instead of complying with perceived pressure, Sheeran should have canceled the tour and performed free concerts outside venues. "The reason it’s not an anomaly or niche issue is because we all live in a world where billionaires are constantly telling us what to do. So stand the f--- up," Antonoff told The Guardian.
Reports indicated that New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft was among NFL owners who allegedly threatened to bar Sheeran's stadium performances if Macklemore remained on the tour. Antonoff, who has also expressed support for a "free Palestine," praised Macklemore for speaking out, calling his stance "a deeply human thing to say."
Sheeran addressed the controversy during a concert in Philadelphia, stating, "What happened in Israel and at the Nova Music Festival on Oct. 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain. What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate." Several other artists scheduled to open for Sheeran, including Finneas, Aaron Rowe, and Lukas Graham, reportedly dropped out of the tour in solidarity with Macklemore. The rapper has since announced a "Free Palestine Tour."
Film critic Christian Toto offered a different perspective, suggesting Antonoff's comments were an attempt to gain favor within his industry rather than a genuine concern for free speech. "If Sheeran scrapped his tour, how many workers would lose their jobs? And, if he did an alternative tour, how would they get paid?" Toto questioned, adding that "blanketly bashing billionaires, a lazy, thoughtless attack" is acceptable within the industry and might appeal to certain audiences.
