Ja'Marr Chase Criticizes NFL Fines, Urges Players to Unite for Financial Protection
Bengals receiver calls for 'superstars' to advocate against league penalties for celebrations.
Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase has voiced strong criticism of the NFL’s fining policies, particularly after San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk was fined $14,926 for a touchdown celebration. Chase believes that the league's actions necessitate a unified response from players.
"I think this is where the superstars have to get in with the NFLPA and fight for our money," Chase stated, expressing frustration over the penalty for Juszczyk’s gesture, which mimicked drinking juice. Chase argued that if such celebrations result in fines, players like himself, penalized for other touchdown dances, also face unwarranted financial penalties.
Chase further elaborated on the restrictive environment created by these fines, noting that players feel compelled to remain silent about their grievances. "So it’s really like players gotta keep their mouths shut," he said. "We gotta have a superstar in the NFLPA do something about it, help us along the way."
Adding to the controversy, Chase himself woke up to news of a fine from the league. He and Bengals teammate Tee Higgins received unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during the Bengals' victory over the Texans for a celebration involving an elbow motion. Chase explained that the meaning behind this celebration, created in the locker room, is not for public disclosure.
In contrast to Chase's recent celebration, Juszczyk's "juice" celebration has been a long-standing signature move. After scoring, the fullback pretends to chug an imaginary cup of juice, a gesture tied to his nickname. Juszczyk confirmed to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter that the celebration is an "ode to his nickname" and clarified that he does not drink beer.
Juszczyk has initiated the appeal process for his fine. Meanwhile, his teammate George Kittle humorously acknowledged the situation by posting a picture of Juszczyk with a beer, captioning it, "He can’t be stopped!! This is before practice! Are you kidding me @JuiceCheck44."
