Former NBA player J.R. Smith has been issued an emergency protective order in Texas following his arrest last month on charges of assault causing bodily injury to a family member. The order, signed by a judge on September 29, prohibits Smith from having any communication with the alleged victim, except through an attorney, and bars him from approaching within 333 yards of her residence or place of employment.
Smith is also prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under the terms of the order, which is set to remain in effect until December 29. The charges stem from an alleged incident on September 18, where Smith is accused of intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly causing injury to a woman described as a member of his family, household, or someone with whom he had a dating relationship.
Court documents indicate that Smith allegedly struck, grabbed, or pushed the woman during the altercation. A warrant for his arrest was issued by the Southlake Police Department shortly after the incident. Smith was taken into custody on September 28 during a traffic stop in Royse City, Texas. He was released on September 29 after posting a $5,000 bond.
Smith's attorney, Justin A. Moore, stated that his client is eager for the matter to be resolved and has confidence in the legal process. Moore added that Smith is presumed innocent and requested privacy for all involved. A request for further comment from Moore regarding the protective order was not immediately returned.
Smith played in the NBA from 2004 to 2020, winning two championships during his career.
