J.R. Smith Arrested on Family Violence Charge in Texas
The former NBA player faces a charge of assault causing bodily injury.
Former NBA player J.R. Smith was arrested Tuesday in Texas on a charge of assault causing bodily injury, according to Hunt County jail records.
Smith, a two-time NBA champion, is being held at the Hunt County Detention Center. Jail records indicate that no bond has been set.
Smith played 16 seasons in the NBA, earning Sixth Man of the Year honors with the New York Knicks in 2013. He won his first championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015-16 season and his second with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. His last NBA game appearance was in Game 3 of the 2020 NBA Finals.
In May, Smith graduated with a Liberal Arts degree from North Carolina A&T, where he was a walk-on for the men’s golf team. He has recently participated in amateur golf tournaments. Smith has not formally announced his retirement from the NBA.
