After a decorated 16-year NBA career, J.R. Smith is setting his sights on a new competitive arena: golf. Smith, a two-time NBA champion, has expressed his ambition to become a prominent figure in the golf world, drawing parallels to Snoop Dogg's multifaceted media presence.

"I want to be the Snoop of golf," Smith told The Post, referencing the rapper's work as a commentator and correspondent for NBC during multiple Olympic Games. Smith believes he can carve out a unique space in golf, blending athletic involvement with entertainment.

His engagement with golf extends beyond personal play. Smith, who played collegiate golf at North Carolina A&T from 2021 to 2026, is focused on the entrepreneurial side of the sport. He aims to host his own tournaments and events, with a particular emphasis on grassroots development for younger generations. A key initiative for Smith is increasing the participation of Black individuals in golf.

"I think there can be a better job of promoting golf and different events and tournaments for the younger generation… Black people playing the game of golf, that’s where I’m really trying to tap into — getting people who look like myself into the game," he stated.

Smith has been actively involved in various golf events and brand partnerships. He served as an ambassador for Oakley Golf, assisting in the testing and promotion of their Fusion Collection. He sees golf as a personal challenge that mirrors the competitive intensity of his basketball career.

"[Golf] is another way for me to be as competitive as I was on court, and even more so because it’s just you competing," Smith said. "So I put a lot of time into my game. My lady would definitely say I did. So for me, I tell you, it’s very serious, and I’m definitely trying to win."

His recent golf activities include participating in the Advocates Professional Golf Association (APGA) and the Michael Eaves Classic & Celebrity Pro-Am. Earlier in 2026, he competed in the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions in Orlando, Florida, an event that features athletes, entertainers, and musicians playing alongside professional golfers.

Smith, who graduated with a Liberal Arts degree from North Carolina A&T in May 2026, has been open about his dedication to improving his golf game. He previously played as a walk-on for the university's men's golf team. His NBA career included being named the league's Sixth Man of the Year in 2013 and winning championships with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015-16 season and the Los Angeles Lakers on October 4, 2020. He reunited with members of the 2016 Cavaliers championship team in June 2026 to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their historic title, an occasion that included golf outings.
