J.P. Morgan Resolves Isa Payment Issue After Reader's Plea

A customer's attempts to contribute £5,000 to his wife's stocks and shares Isa with J.P. Morgan Personal Investing were initially thwarted by payment blocks, prompting intervention to resolve the issue. The reader, who has been married for 53 years and manages finances jointly with his wife, encountered difficulties when trying to transfer funds from their joint savings account into her individual Isa.

J.P. Morgan Personal Investing, formerly known as Nutmeg, had blocked the payments, citing concerns that the funds were not originating from an account in the wife's name. This created confusion and distress, particularly as the wife has Alzheimer's disease and the husband has a power of attorney in place to manage her finances. The bank's insistence on speaking directly with the wife about the payment blocks caused her discomfort.

After repeated unsuccessful attempts to deposit the funds in August and September, the reader sought assistance. A J.P. Morgan spokesperson explained that the blocks were a security measure to ensure payments came from a legitimate source and were made from an account in the account holder's name. While acknowledging that their communication could have been clearer, the firm stated that such measures are in place to protect clients.

Following the intervention, the block on the account has been removed, and the £5,000 payment has been successfully processed into the wife's Isa. As a goodwill gesture, J.P. Morgan also added £150 to the Isa. The reader expressed hope that the firm would update its procedures to prevent similar issues for other customers in the future.
