J.K. Rowling Links Transgender Policies to Gym Assault
Author J.K. Rowling suggested that pro-transgender policies created an environment where a convicted pedophile could allegedly attack two women in a Massachusetts Planet Fitness locker room.
Author J.K. Rowling has asserted that policies allowing individuals to use facilities aligning with their gender identity may be exploited by predators. Rowling's comments came in response to an incident on October 1, where Laquan Holland, 40, was arrested for allegedly assaulting two women in the women's locker room of a Planet Fitness in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Police have charged Holland with two counts of rape, two counts of assault and battery, kidnapping, and witness intimidation, according to NBC Boston. Prosecutors stated that Holland allegedly touched private areas of the second victim without her consent after she attempted to intervene in the assault on the first victim. There is no indication that Holland identified as transgender.
Rowling shared her perspective on X, formerly Twitter, stating, "The thing that never happens and could never happen and that only evil people predicted would happen has happened again." This remark was made in reference to a news report about the alleged assault.
Court records viewed by The Boston Globe indicate that Holland is a repeat offender with prior convictions in 2006 for child rape and indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. Planet Fitness has stated that the gym has canceled Holland's membership and is cooperating with law enforcement.
Rowling has maintained that her views are not transphobic, but rather stem from concerns that women's rights are being encroached upon by transgender rights. She advocates for individuals to present as they wish but argues against biological males who identify as women being allowed in female-only spaces or competing in women's sports.
Her stance has drawn criticism from some, including her former Harry Potter co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson. Rowling has previously criticized Watson, suggesting the actress's views are detached from reality due to her privileged upbringing. Rowling stated that Watson likely has no experience with situations like homeless shelters, mixed-sex public hospital wards, or everyday high street changing rooms.
