J.J. Watt Elevated to CBS' Lead NFL Booth After Tony Romo's Departure

J.J. Watt has been solidified in CBS's No. 1 broadcast booth, stepping in as the lead NFL analyst for the remainder of the season following Tony Romo's exit from the network. CBS confirmed that Watt will continue to partner with Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for its top NFL announcing team.

The network stated that all other broadcast teams will remain unchanged, including Ian Eagle, Ross Tucker, and Evan Washburn. The development comes after Romo and CBS officially parted ways, concluding the former Cowboys quarterback's nine-year tenure as the lead NFL analyst. Romo had been on leave from the network following an OWI arrest over the summer.

While Watt will fill the lead analyst role for the current season, there is no indication of who will occupy the position beyond this season. Romo had signed a 10-year, $180 million contract extension with CBS in 2020, with four years and $72 million remaining on the deal. Financial terms of his departure have not been announced, but reports suggest he will receive a significant portion of the remaining contract value.

This move occurs amid a period of significant contract negotiations and shifts in the NFL broadcasting landscape. Recently, Amazon Prime Video's Kirk Herbstreit agreed to a new deal, and ESPN extended Joe Buck's contract for six years at $108 million. These moves have raised questions about the futures of other prominent broadcasters, including Troy Aikman, whose contract with ESPN is set to expire. Should Aikman not be re-signed by ESPN and Watt not continue with CBS's lead team, CBS could become a potential destination for Aikman, which would signify the end of his and Buck's 25-year broadcast partnership.
