J.J. McCarthy Makes Giants Debut in Tie Against Commanders
Rookie quarterback saw limited action as veteran Jameis Winston led a second-half comeback.
J.J. McCarthy entered the game for the New York Giants in their 27-27 tie against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, marking his debut with the team. However, the rookie quarterback was limited to five snaps, rushing twice for 2 yards and throwing two passes that were nullified by penalties. Veteran quarterback Jameis Winston, who rallied the Giants from a 14-point deficit, took the majority of the snaps.
Head coach John Harbaugh acknowledged the team's situation, stating, "We're in a situation where it's by any means necessary. Sometimes it's going to work. Most of the time, it's going to work — we hope, if we're going to get where we want to go — and sometimes it's not. We had a chance in a couple of those to make big plays."
Winston had a strong performance, throwing for 326 yards and three touchdowns, which his coach indicated may improve his job security. McCarthy's passes were primarily on short routes, including a jet sweep and a bubble screen, with no attempts downfield.
"The coaches get paid a lot of money to make decisions," Winston said. "I had a chance to play with one of the best [RPO quarterbacks] of all time in Taysom Hill. So, whatever is required for this [team] to win, I am for that."
Meanwhile, Commanders head coach Dan Quinn expressed regret over not attempting a game-winning 42-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining, opting instead to run another play that expired the clock. "I don't need to put him in that spot at all," Quinn said, recalling his experience coaching the Falcons in Super Bowl 51 when they lost a large lead. "We don't need to gain more. Let's go win it right there."
The Giants, now holding a 3-1-1 record, are still seeking their first road victory. They suffered a significant loss to the Rams in their previous road game and were unable to secure a win against the Commanders in their first NFC East road matchup. "It's hard to come on the road and win," nose tackle DJ Reader told The Post. "People got pride, their families are watching. We came on the road, and we got beat pretty bad last time. We got a tie this time. Next time we got to go get a 'dub.'"
Harbaugh noted the strong presence of Giants fans at the away game. "Wow, I mean our fans were loud," he said. "At the end of the game, especially, it was really something to see. Really proud of our fans."
