J.J. McCarthy Delivers Emotional Speech After Leading Giants to Overtime Victory
Quarterback thanks teammates and vows to continue success following his first win as a starter.
Giants quarterback J.J. McCarthy delivered an emotional speech in the locker room following his team's 27-21 overtime victory against the Houston Texans. McCarthy, who earned his first win as a starting quarterback, expressed gratitude and confidence in his team.
"I don’t got a whole lot to say, but I’m just so freaking blessed to be a part of this group," McCarthy said. "I felt you guys all freaking day have my back, and you know I got yours the rest of the f–king way."
He continued, "Hey, this is just the f–king beginning. This group is so talented, but the secret sauce is the s–t we just did out there. The resilience, the will to f–king finish no matter what it looks like. I f–king love you boys. Let’s keep it up."
McCarthy completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 yards, with no touchdowns or interceptions. The Giants' rushing attack provided all the scoring, with Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr., and Devin Singletary each scoring touchdowns. Quarterback Jameis Winston also added a rushing touchdown.
McCarthy was acquired by the Giants in September after Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending injury. He was named the starter after a Week 6 loss to the Saints, where he threw for 243 yards in the fourth quarter, tying Eli Manning's 2012 franchise record for most passing yards in a single fourth quarter.
Originally selected 10th overall by the Vikings in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCarthy spent his rookie season recovering from a torn right meniscus. He went 6-4 in 10 starts for the Vikings in his first season.
The Giants will have their bye week in Week 8 before facing the Philadelphia Eagles on November 8.
