Italy Deploys Troops Amid Riots; France Bolsters Security
Both nations increase military presence to quell violent unrest, as demonstrations see clashes between police and demonstrators.
Italy is deploying 500 troops with expanded police powers to address violent riots that erupted over the weekend, taking a more direct military approach to public security. This comes as France, which has experienced weeks of unrest, also reinforces its security measures.
Videos circulating on social media showed violent confrontations between demonstrators and police in both Italy and France, with images of burning buildings and looted storefronts. In Milan, rioters threw explosive firecrackers and barriers at police, who were forced to retreat. Similarly, in Paris, officers attempted to contain hundreds of demonstrators, using crowd-control measures as they made a gradual withdrawal.
Investigations into the unrest in France suggest involvement from socialist groups, Islamic advocacy organizations, and environmental activists. Financial analysts estimate that the riots in France caused over $1 billion in damages. Some demonstrators were seen waving foreign flags, including Palestinian flags in France and an Albanian flag during the violence in Milan. Italian media reported that many first and second-generation migrants were among the rioters in Milan.
France has been experiencing demonstrations since last month, with reports of schools being burned and ransacked. The nation's interior minister announced that the military, including gendarmes (military police officers), would increase its presence to support law enforcement efforts and free up police for order maintenance.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced a similar deployment of 500 troops to Milan, with the country's deputy prime minister explaining that these forces would be granted police powers. Authorities in both countries are preparing for further potential unrest this coming weekend.
