An Israeli airstrike on a post belonging to Gaza's Hamas-run police force in the northern Jabalia area killed at least seven people, including a senior officer, according to health and police officials. Witnesses told the BBC that an Israeli drone fired four missiles at the post, which is located near a busy market.
The Hamas-run interior ministry in the Palestinian territory condemned the incident as a "massacre," identifying the deceased police station chief as Col. Mohammed Marwan Salem. An Israeli military official confirmed an operation in the area, stating that "terrorists" were targeted.
Separately, two other individuals were reported killed by Israeli fire in southern Gaza on Tuesday. An airstrike in the Khan Younis area resulted in one death and three injuries, according to medics, who stated that the target was a Hamas operative. In Rafah, a 10-year-old boy was killed by Israeli gunfire, sources said, though the Israeli military has not yet commented on this specific incident.
Both Israel and Hamas have accused each other of violating the ceasefire that began in October. Gaza's health ministry reports at least 1,110 people killed by Israeli fire since then. The Israeli military states four soldiers have been killed in Palestinian attacks. The ongoing conflict originated from the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the taking of 251 hostages. Israel's subsequent military campaign in Gaza has, according to the territory's health ministry, led to over 73,230 fatalities.
