Israeli Opposition Parties Vow to Unseat Netanyahu in Upcoming Elections
Key opposition leaders pledge to cooperate to increase voter turnout and reform the government.
Leading Israeli opposition parties have announced a joint effort to defeat Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government in upcoming elections, according to a statement released Saturday evening.
The parties, including former military chief Gadi Eisenkot and ex-Prime Ministers Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid, stated they would collaborate to increase voter turnout and combat misinformation in the elections, which they described as "critical to the future of the state."
The announcement comes as Gaza's Health Ministry reported that the Palestinian death toll from the nearly three-year Israel-Hamas war has surpassed 74,000 people. The ministry also stated that 175,068 Palestinians have been wounded since the conflict began on October 7, 2023. On that date, Hamas-led militants attacked Israel, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 individuals.
Since a ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2023, Gaza's Health Ministry, which is part of the Hamas-led government, reported 1,145 Palestinian deaths, making up about half of the total toll, which does not distinguish between civilians and militants. Seven Israeli soldiers have also been killed since the ceasefire.
Despite the ceasefire, Israeli strikes have continued, with the military citing responses to threats or attacks. Key aspects of the U.S.-brokered ceasefire remain stalled: Israeli forces control over half of the Palestinian territory, Hamas has not disarmed, a new Palestinian government has not been established, and reconstruction efforts have not commenced. Prime Minister Netanyahu has stated that Israeli forces will not withdraw until Hamas disarms.
The upcoming elections are widely viewed as a referendum on the security failures that preceded the October 7 attacks. The opposition leaders, including Yair Golan of a center-left party and Avigdor Lieberman of a hawkish party, have committed to working together to formulate the foundational principles of a future government.
