Israeli Embassy Claims Scottish Politicians Denied Entry for Non-Cooperation, False Information

Two Scottish politicians, SNP MP Lara Bird and Green MSP Kate Nevens, were denied entry to the West Bank after their delegation allegedly failed to cooperate with border officials and provided false information, according to the Embassy of Israel in the United Kingdom. The politicians were part of a delegation organized by the Progressive International group, which also included Labour MP Clive Lewis.

The group was reportedly detained for eight hours by Israeli authorities while attempting to cross from Jordan. They had planned to meet with Palestinian academics, students, and civil society organizations, and to participate in olive harvests amid claims of increasing attacks on farmers.

Israeli officials stated that the group was refused entry to Israel for failing to cooperate with border officials and providing false information about the purpose of their visit. The Foreign Office in the UK advises against all travel to certain areas of the West Bank, including Tulkarm, Jenin, and Tubas, and against all but essential travel to other parts.

Opponents criticized the politicians for what they described as 'political grandstanding' and ignoring Foreign Office advice. Scottish Conservative deputy leader Rachael Hamilton stated that the politicians should be focused on their duties at home rather than engaging in overseas 'stunts.' Reform MSP Angela Ross questioned the purpose of the trip and whether public funds were used.

A spokesperson for First Minister John Swinney indicated general support for solidarity with the Palestinian people. When asked about the Israeli Embassy's claims, Progressive International did not provide a direct response, instead forwarding a statement from Ms. Bird. Bird stated that she intended to stand with Palestinians being attacked for harvesting olives and expressed frustration at being prevented from bearing witness and showing solidarity, questioning why Israel would prevent observation if it had nothing to hide.

Ms. Nevens described her experience as frightening but noted their safe departure, comparing it to the more severe realities faced by Palestinians daily. The Progressive International group has denied the Israeli Embassy's claims.

Green MSP Kate Nevens was also part of a delegation which was detained for eight hours by Israeli authorities
