Israel's FA Slams Ireland Manager's 'Genocide' Comments

The Israeli Football Association (FA) has publicly condemned Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson for his use of the word 'genocide' in comments made prior to upcoming fixtures. In a strongly worded statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, the Israeli FA accused Hallgrimsson of displaying "ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity."

Hallgrimsson had reportedly stated, "we're not playing with genocide, we're playing against genocide. So, we're playing against Israel. We're not playing with Israel." These remarks were made in the context of preparations for matches against Israel, which the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) had previously sought to have suspended from competitions.

The Israeli FA's response directly addressed Hallgrimsson's language, stating, "We have contributed to the world and humanity in countless fields, earning an impressive number of Nobel Prizes along the way. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy displayed by the Republic of Ireland team coach. We're not playing with ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity, we're playing against the coach who embodies them."

Reports suggest that the Israeli FA intends to file a complaint with UEFA, the governing body for European football, regarding Hallgrimsson's comments. Hallgrimsson was reportedly overseeing training for Ireland's upcoming match against Kosovo.

The controversy extends to calls from a campaign group, "Stop the Game," which published an open letter signed by over 100 sporting figures. The letter urged players not to participate in the fixtures against Israel, citing pressure on athletes after attempts to influence governing bodies and the government were unsuccessful. Signatories included notable figures such as Ciara Mageean, Louise Quinn, Tony Ward, Joe Brolly, and Colm O'Rourke.
