Israel Marks Third Anniversary of October 7 Attack Amidst Ongoing Conflict and Political Divisions

Israelis gathered on Wednesday to commemorate the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attack that killed 1,200 people and saw 251 taken hostage, an event that ignited a devastating war in Gaza. The commemorations arrive as the region grapples with the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian consequences, and deep political divisions within Israel.

In southern Israel, families mourned at intersections, bomb shelters, and the site of the Nova music festival, where Hamas-led militants carried out one of the deadliest attacks against the nation. This marks the first anniversary where all hostages have been returned, ushering in a new phase of grief.

For Palestinians, the anniversary signifies another day of hardship. Israel's retaliatory campaign in Gaza has led to widespread devastation, displacing approximately 90 percent of the territory's 2 million residents. Large parts of Gaza's cities have been reduced to rubble, and much of the population now lives in squalid tent camps. Restrictions on the entry of goods and aid have contributed to a severe hunger crisis. According to Gaza's Health Ministry, over 74,000 Palestinians have been killed, a figure that includes militants, women, and children.

Despite a ceasefire that took effect nearly a year ago, Israeli strikes continue almost daily, targeting what Israel states are Hamas militants. Since the ceasefire, the Gaza Health Ministry reports 1,145 Palestinian deaths, while seven Israeli soldiers have been killed in the same period.

The anniversary is overshadowed by a contentious election in Israel scheduled for later this month. Official memorial services organized by the government took place on October 5, closer to the Hebrew calendar anniversary. These separate commemorations highlight significant divisions over Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the war and his reluctance to launch an official inquiry into the failures that preceded the October 7 attack.

Elkana Bohbot, who was abducted from the Nova music festival and held captive for 738 days, shared his experience. He described being held in dark, damp tunnels with limited food and infrequent opportunities to bathe. Bohbot was forced to participate in propaganda videos by his captors. Since his release, he has undergone rehabilitation, written a book, and begun a speaking career. His wife recently gave birth to their daughter, Michele, a child he sees as a message of resilience. "So this child is the message for you that we were here, and we will always be here forever," Bohbot stated.

The October 7 attacks initiated a cascade of events that have led to wider regional conflicts. Israeli troops are engaged in a conflict with Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, where over 300,000 Lebanese have been displaced. The United States and Israel have also conducted joint operations against Iran's military and nuclear program, impacting global markets. Violence has escalated in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, with reports of extremist settlers attacking Palestinians and destroying property.

Former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett criticized the government's actions, calling the attack a "colossal failure of the state of Israel." He contrasted this with the bravery shown by young Israelis during the attack. Prime Minister Netanyahu, marking the anniversary in Jerusalem, vowed that there would be "no forgiveness for the murderers" and pledged to prevent Hamas from ruling Gaza.

Heightened security measures are in place for the anniversary events, with Israel's defense minister placing the military on high alert due to intelligence regarding potential Hamas attacks.
