Israel FA Slams Ireland Manager Over "Genocide" Comments

The Israeli Football Association (FA) has sharply criticized Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson for his use of the word "genocide" in comments made prior to upcoming matches. The FA accused Hallgrimsson of "ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity" on social media platform X.

Hallgrimsson, speaking over the weekend, defended his team's stance, stating, "we're not playing with genocide, we're playing against genocide. So, we're playing against Israel. We're not playing with Israel."

In response, the Israeli FA posted on X, "We have contributed to the world and humanity in countless fields, earning an impressive number of Nobel Prizes along the way. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy displayed by the Republic of Ireland team coach. We're not playing with ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity, we're playing against the coach who embodies them."

The Israeli FA indicated its intention to report Hallgrimsson to UEFA.

The controversy surrounds upcoming fixtures involving Israel. The Football Association of Ireland had previously sought to have Israel suspended from competitions. Hallgrimsson's comments come as Ireland is preparing for matches against Kosovo, Israel, and a second match against Israel later in the month.

A campaign titled "Stop the Game" has also emerged, with an open letter published on Monday signed by over 100 sporting figures urging that the fixtures against Israel not be played. The letter claims that pressure is being applied to players after attempts to influence governing bodies and the government were unsuccessful. Signatories included Ciara Mageean, Louise Quinn, Tony Ward, Joe Brolly, and Colm O'Rourke.
