Israel FA Criticizes Ireland Manager Hallgrimsson Over Comments

The Israel Football Association has accused Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson of "ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity" following comments he made last week. Hallgrimsson's remarks came during a press conference for the upcoming Nations League games, which include two fixtures against Israel.

When asked about keeping his players focused, Hallgrimsson stated, "We're not playing with genocide, we're playing against genocide. We're playing against Israel, we're not playing with Israel." In response, the Israel FA posted on social media, "We have contributed to the world and humanity in countless fields, earning an impressive number of Nobel Prizes along the way. Unfortunately, we have not yet found a cure for stupidity, ignorance and hypocrisy displayed by @IrelandFootball team coach. We're not playing with ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity, we're playing against the coach who embodies them."

The Football Association of Ireland has not yet commented on the Israel FA's statement. Meanwhile, a protest was held at the Republic of Ireland team's hotel on Monday evening, indicating ongoing pressure for a boycott of the matches.

More than 160 Irish sports figures have signed an open letter organized by the Irish Sport for Palestine Group, urging a boycott of the games against Israel. The letter calls on the FAI, UEFA, and the Irish government to intervene, suggesting that not playing would be the most "sporting thing" to do and would demonstrate the power of sport to unite.

Among the signatories are Olympian Ciara Mageean, former Republic of Ireland footballer Louise Quinn, ex-Ireland rugby player Tony Ward, and boxers Tyrone McKenna and Eric Donovan. Several prominent figures from Gaelic games, including Padraig O'Hora, Joe Brolly, Colm O'Rourke, Michael Darragh Macauley, Philly McMahon, Valerie Mulcahy, and Rena Buckley, have also added their names, alongside para-athlete Alan Dineen and ultimate frisbee player Stephen Jones, who previously boycotted fixtures against Israel.

The Republic of Ireland is scheduled to play Israel on September 27 in Hungary, with the return match set for October 4 in Serbia.

The conflict that has led to heightened tensions began with an attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and the taking of 251 hostages. Israel's subsequent military operation in Gaza, according to United Nations estimates, has resulted in over 70,000 Palestinian deaths. Israel has consistently denied accusations of genocide or war crimes, asserting that its actions in Gaza are justified as self-defense.
