Israel-Bound Plane Lands in Saudi Arabia After Pilot Brawl

A commercial flight from Dubai to Israel made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday after an altercation between the plane's pilots, according to reports. The incident briefly raised fears of a hijacking and led Israel to scramble fighter jets.

The FlyDubai plane landed safely in Tabuk, a city in northwestern Saudi Arabia that hosts a civilian and military airport. Israeli media, citing security officials, reported that the disturbance originated from a fight in the cockpit.

Publicly available flight tracking data indicated that the plane transmitted an emergency alert shortly after departing Dubai. A regional official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that a fight occurred in the cockpit, though the exact cause remained unclear.

Given the flight's destination and the nature of the alert, Israel mobilized warplanes as a precaution against a potential hijacking. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has recently spoken of unspecified escalated security threats.

FlyDubai confirmed that flight FZ 1073 experienced an incident and landed safely in Tabuk. "Our teams are working closely with the relevant authorities," a spokesperson for the airline stated. "Further updates will be issued as additional confirmed details become available."

Passengers on board told Israel's Channel 12 that they heard shouting from passengers at the front of the plane who had overheard the altercation. They also reported that the plane experienced a steep dip before landing.

Following the landing, passengers remained on the aircraft while a significant Saudi security presence surrounded it. Netanyahu's office later announced that the situation was under control and that efforts were underway to ensure the passengers' safe return.

Commercial flights between the United Arab Emirates and Israel have been operating since the normalization of ties between the two countries in 2020. The UAE has become a popular destination for Israeli tourists.
