The Manxman, the primary ferry serving the Isle of Man, will remain out of service for an extended period due to unforeseen technical issues discovered during its drydock maintenance. The Steam Packet, the ferry operator, has not yet confirmed a revised date for the vessel's return to service.
Initially scheduled to resume operations on Wednesday, the ferry's extended stay in drydock is attributed to "essential" repairs identified while the vessel was undergoing planned maintenance. The company stated that these additional works are crucial for ensuring the ferry's long-term safety and operational reliability.
"Completing these additional works now will ensure the vessel can continue to provide a reliable and dependable service in the years ahead," said Managing Director Brian Thomson. He acknowledged the potential frustration for passengers but emphasized the necessity of the repairs.
The disruption has already led to cancellations on the Heysham route on Sunday and Tuesday, as the backup vessel, the Ben-my-Chree, has also experienced technical difficulties. The Steam Packet operates daily sailings between the Isle of Man and Lancashire and Liverpool, as well as regular services to Larne in Northern Ireland.
