Isle of Man Grants Royal Assent to Assisted Dying Bill

Assisted dying is set to become legal on the Isle of Man after the Assisted Dying Bill was granted Royal Assent, following approval from Westminster. The bill's author, Alex Allinson, described the development as the "culmination of decades of campaigning by island residents and their politicians to ensure greater choice, compassion and dignity for those facing a terminal illness."

Clare Barber, a former environment minister and a supporter of the bill, emphasized its importance, stating that "the concept of a good death is one that is exceptionally important to me." She added that the legislation "does not negate the need for palliative care, it compliments it."

However, the bill has faced opposition. Manx Duty of Care, a group campaigning against the legislation, expressed "deep disappointment" and called for "new members of Tynwald to table a bill to repeal it at once." The group contends that the law "clearly breaches the European Convention on Human Rights, the Isle of Man NHS Act and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities."
