Islanders' Kyle MacLean and Mitchell Chaffee Make Impactful Season Debuts Amidst Roster Challenges

Kyle MacLean and Mitchell Chaffee made their first appearances of the season for the Islanders on Tuesday night, stepping into the lineup during a period of roster instability. The team was forced to call up Chaffee on an emergency basis from AHL Hamilton on Monday, and MacLean finally got his chance after patiently waiting through the season's first three weeks.

Their integration came as the Islanders grappled with injuries to forwards Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli, leaving the team with only 12 healthy forwards. "I feel like I’ve been working, staying patient. Never like to see injuries, but definitely excited for this opportunity and looking forward to being in the lineup," MacLean stated before the 3-2 victory over Anaheim.

Coach Pete DeBoer acknowledged the contributions of both players, who formed part of a fourth line centered by Casey Cizikas. "I thought they did a great job," DeBoer commented. "I didn’t have to hide them. They had some shifts against their big guys. I thought they gave us energy, they gave us some physicality. Some really good puck-possession shifts, especially in the third period."

MacLean, known for his strong puck retrieval abilities similar to Cizikas, and Chaffee, who brings a workmanlike approach and a strong shot, provided a physical presence. MacLean described Chaffee as "a good worker. He’s a strong player too and he’s got a really good shot — he’s pretty lethal when he gets it off. I think what we saw [in training camp] is he’s a good worker. I think he’s gonna complement Casey great. Be good on the forecheck, be hard on pucks and he’s got a good, sneaky shot too."

While DeBoer has expressed a preference for all four lines to contribute offensively, the emergence of a more traditional, hard-working fourth line offers a different kind of value. Chaffee has some scoring history, with 12 goals for the Lightning in 2024-25 and point-per-game production in the AHL, although he faced challenges in an 11-game stint with Tampa last season.

In separate injury news, DeBoer addressed the "ambiguity" surrounding Mat Barzal's recovery. "I just think injuries are different. If you have a broken bone, it’s a really clear timeline: 4-6 weeks or whatever it is," he explained. "I think with what he’s dealing with, there’s more ambiguity. And I think that’s what you’re seeing, and that’s what we’re dealing with."

A team spokesman indicated that Mathieu Darche would be made available to provide further updates on Barzal's injury situation soon.
