Islanders GM: Barzal Nearing Next Stage of Knee Recovery
While no definitive timeline exists for Mat Barzal's return, General Manager Mathieu Darche indicates positive progress in managing his knee injury.

New York Islanders General Manager Mathieu Darche provided an update on forward Mat Barzal's recovery from a left knee injury, stating that doctors are comfortable with him progressing to the next stage. Although a specific return date remains undetermined, Darche confirmed that the inflammation that initially delayed Barzal's season debut has been controlled.
"Initially there was some inflammation. We feel it’s controlled now. Now it’s getting him to feel comfortable to take the next step," Darche said. "There’s no setbacks. Nothing happened, no procedure. Since training camp, nothing has come [up]. We feel we’re controlling the inflammation. It’s just how comfortable he feels."
Barzal has been skating independently for the past few weeks. Darche noted that while inflammation has subsided, the focus is now on rebuilding Barzal's strength and comfort level. "He’s skating. Progress every day. Can I give you a definite timeline? No. We hope it’s sooner, but every day, he’s starting to skate a little bit more and we’re hoping to, at some point, get him with the team and we’ll go from there," Darche added.
The original plan was for Barzal to resume skating around the start of the season, but this was delayed. The injury involves his left kneecap, which required surgery two years ago. Darche indicated that the team does not believe the management of the knee last season contributed to the current flare-up, and there are no current discussions about further procedures.
Attention now turns to whether Barzal will join the team on their upcoming road trip, which could allow him to begin practicing with the group. A non-contact practice jersey would likely be the next step before full participation and a return to game action.
The Islanders have managed to perform well despite Barzal's absence, along with injuries to Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli. As of Thursday, the team held a 5-3-1 record, demonstrating strong defensive play under coach Pete DeBoer.
Darche also addressed rumors concerning defenseman Scott Mayfield, dismissing reports that Mayfield might request a trade if he continues to be an extra defenseman. "I can tell you right now, there’s no truth to any of those rumors," Darche stated.
