Islanders Fall to Senators in Shootout
New York Islanders lose a close game to the Ottawa Senators, with Shane Pinto scoring the decisive shootout goal.
The New York Islanders were unable to secure a win against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night, falling 2-1 in a shootout. Despite a strong performance from goaltender Semyon Varlamov, who made a series of key saves in his second start of the season since returning from knee surgery, the Islanders struggled to generate consistent offense.
Varlamov was particularly effective in the second period, making a notable reaction save and helping his team kill off three penalties. However, the Senators managed to score once during this intense stretch, with Ridly Greig finding the back of the net off a pass from Warren Foegele. Two other potential Senators goals were disallowed earlier in the game due to offside and the puck not fully crossing the goal line.
The Islanders made line adjustments in the third period, moving Cal Ritchie and Anthony Duclair to the fourth line, Simon Holmstrom to the third, and Emil Heineman to the second line with Brayden Schenn shifting to center. These changes contributed to a tighter defensive game for the Islanders, but they were unable to break the 1-1 tie.
Despite a late power play opportunity, the Islanders failed to convert. Matias Maccelli had opened the scoring for the Islanders late in the first period, capitalizing on a turnover by Shane Pinto. The third line, consisting of Duclair, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and Ondrej Palat, was the only forward unit that consistently created scoring chances throughout the game. The Islanders also faced challenges breaking the puck out against Ottawa's forecheck.
The loss leaves the Islanders looking to regroup as they continue their season.
