Islanders Face Top-Six Scoring Questions Amidst Strong Bottom Six Performance

The New York Islanders are grappling with persistent questions surrounding their top-six forward group, a situation highlighted by the season-long deployment cycle of winger Simon Holmstrom. Despite a strong showing from the team's bottom-six players, the Islanders lack the consistent top-line scoring that would allow their depth to be utilized most effectively.

Holmstrom, a 25-year-old Swedish winger, has seen his role fluctuate throughout the early part of the season. He began on the Islanders' top line, with the team hoping he would elevate his game to a full-time top-six player after two consecutive 40-point seasons. However, a slow start led to him being moved to the third line and, most recently, the fourth line. During a 3-2 victory against the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night, Holmstrom registered his best performance of the season, appearing more like his usual self.

This pattern is not new for Holmstrom. While the specific line combinations may change, the general arc remains consistent: Holmstrom tends to perform well when placed in the bottom-six forward group, often finding his game alongside Jean-Gabriel Pageau on the third line. Conversely, his consistency diminishes when he is placed in a top-six role.

Without the presence of key player Mat Barzal, the Islanders' offense has struggled to generate consistent scoring from its top lines. The team's depth, particularly in the bottom six, has been a bright spot, as demonstrated in the win over Vancouver. However, the overarching issue remains the team's inability to consistently fill its top-six scoring positions, creating a scenario where their well-performing depth is not deployed in the most advantageous way.
