Isak's Resurgence Powers Liverpool's Winning Streak

Alexander Isak's impressive form has coincided with Liverpool's current four-game winning streak under manager Andoni Iraola. The Swedish striker, who arrived at Anfield in August 2025 for a British record fee of £125 million, is beginning to justify the club's significant investment.

After a difficult debut season marred by a slow start and a broken leg in December, which limited him to just four goals in 22 appearances, Isak has found a new rhythm this campaign. His goal in Liverpool's recent 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion marked his sixth Premier League goal of the season, placing him second only to Erling Haaland in the league's scoring charts. Isak has now accounted for more than half of Liverpool's Premier League goals this season.

While Isak's contributions may not always be flashy, they have proven pivotal. Against Brighton, his strike provided Liverpool with a crucial advantage against a team that dominated possession and ultimately recorded a higher expected goals (xG) total. This victory marked Liverpool's fourth consecutive league win since their defeat to Manchester City, showcasing a strong performance characterized by aggression and solid defense, which successfully contained a Brighton side that had scored 15 league goals in their previous four matches.

Manager Andoni Iraola expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, noting the intensity and ball-winning efforts, particularly in the first half. "Today, the performance was really good against a really good team," Isak stated after the match. "The first half is really what we want to be about - winning balls and the intensity."

The 27-year-old's resurgence is a welcome development for Liverpool, who acquired him with the expectation of consistent goal-scoring. The club maintained faith during his injury-plagued first season, understanding that a fully fit Isak could significantly impact the team's fortunes. "Alex [Isak] is threatening, especially if we can get him in those positions and we can provide him good crosses," Iraola commented. "In this case, it's a matter of Bradley [Barcola] winning the duel and being faster than the opposition to get us in that position."

The win over Brighton also highlighted Liverpool's tactical flexibility. With only 35.6% possession, their second lowest in a home Premier League win since 2003-04, the team demonstrated an ability to thrive without dominating the ball. This approach, according to Iraola, allows teams to come to Anfield and have more possession, provided they are not set up defensively, which can open up opportunities for Liverpool's potent attack.

Key players Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola also played significant roles in the victory. Wirtz was instrumental in creating chances, though he was unlucky not to be credited with the opening goal when his shot deflected in. Barcola's energetic play and determination to win the ball back for Isak's goal exemplified Iraola's desired high-pressing strategy. However, Wirtz was substituted in the second half with an ankle twist, the severity of which remains to be seen.

The combined transfer fees for Isak and Barcola exceed £248 million, but their current contributions and the team's winning momentum suggest that this investment may be proving its worth for Liverpool and Iraola.
