Isaiah Washington Reflects on Wife's Sudden Death

Sixteen months after her death, actor Isaiah Washington has broken his silence regarding the sudden passing of his wife, Jenisa Garland. Washington, 63, known for his role as Dr. Preston Burke on "Grey's Anatomy," revealed on social media that Garland died on June 9, 2025, following a "massive hemorrhagic stroke" that occurred on May 31, 2025.

"It came as a huge shock to me and our entire family," Washington wrote in a post on Instagram on Saturday, accompanied by a black-and-white photograph of his late wife. He explained that she succumbed to the stroke and never recovered.

Washington urged others to take potential warning signs seriously, advising them to get frequent medical checkups and "take those headaches seriously." He cautioned that some headaches can be more severe than typical migraines and could signal a more serious underlying condition.

The couple married on Valentine's Day in 1996, after meeting at a dinner party in Los Angeles. They had three children together: sons Isaiah V and Tyme, and daughter Iman.

Washington reflected on his wife's privacy but felt compelled to share their experience. "I guess I just have to be reprimanded from her on the other side," he wrote.

In a 2022 interview with Fox News Digital, Washington discussed how his family influenced his acting choices, stating he would "rather kiss a horse than a woman onscreen" to avoid having to explain intimate scenes to his daughter. He noted that being married and having children significantly altered his career trajectory.

Washington is also recognized for his collaborations with director Spike Lee in films such as "Crooklyn," "Clockers," "Girl 6," and "Get on the Bus." He starred on "Grey's Anatomy" for three seasons before his departure in 2007 and later returned for a guest appearance in 2014. In 2023, Washington alluded to an early retirement from acting, suggesting his film "Corsicana" might be his final project.
