Irvine, California, has been ranked as the best city in the United States for hangover recovery, according to a new analysis of major U.S. cities. The study, compiled by data specialists at Play Casino using the "Hungover Hotspots" dataset, evaluated cities based on the convenience of finding wellness amenities and hangover-friendly food options.

California Cities Lead the Pack

The analysis found that Irvine excels in offering numerous juice bars, brunch establishments, and IV hydration services. The city recorded high numbers of these amenities per 100,000 residents, making it easier for those recovering from a night of drinking to find relief. California cities performed strongly overall, with Long Beach ranking third, and Oakland and Stockton placing sixth and seventh, respectively. This gives California four of the top seven spots nationwide.

Stockton specifically led the country in diner access, providing ample opportunities for greasy spoon meals, while Newark, New Jersey, ranked highest for sauna availability.

Methodology and Caveats

The ranking assigned equal 40% weightings to wellness amenities and hangover-friendly food options, with online search demand accounting for the remaining 20%. Plano, Texas, secured the second position, with Miami and Newark rounding out the top five. Other cities in the top 10 included Chandler and Scottsdale in Arizona, and Henderson, Nevada.

However, the analysis comes with a disclaimer that the ranking measures the convenience of nearby services rather than scientifically proven hangover cures. Health authorities, such as the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, have stated that no hangover remedy has been scientifically proven and that recovery ultimately depends on the body processing alcohol byproducts over time.

National Trends in Hangover Searches

The study also examined national search trends related to hangovers. Between 2023 and 2025, Americans made an estimated 756,310 searches for hangover cures and prevention, with a significant majority (93%) seeking cures. Atlanta, Orlando, and Minneapolis showed the highest search rates for hangover-related terms. Notably, overall hangover searches declined by nearly 30% during this period, coinciding with a broader decrease in alcohol consumption.

Memphis, Tennessee, was identified as the city least prepared for hangover recovery, finishing last in the rankings.
