IRS Administrator Oz Launches Crackdown on 'Phantom' Obamacare Accounts

Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz is escalating a crackdown on fraudulent Obamacare enrollments, announcing that 750,000 "phantom" accounts have been removed from the program. This move is expected to save American taxpayers an estimated $2.2 billion.

"These [Obamacare enrollees] are phantom accounts. There are no human beings involved in these accounts," Oz stated in an interview. He elaborated that outreach attempts to these accounts yielded no response regarding claims, verification of identity, or Social Security numbers, making it impossible to determine eligibility for the program.

As part of the enhanced anti-fraud measures, Oz is urging health insurance companies to collaborate exclusively with brokers who record their conversations with potential Obamacare applicants. This initiative aims to introduce greater transparency and accountability in the enrollment process.

"From now on, we're asking insurance companies to work with brokers who record the conversations," Oz said. "Why wouldn't you? What are you nervous about? What are you worried about? Why don't you want me to hear what you discussed?"

The administration also discovered that 1.1 million individuals were receiving benefits from Obamacare without a verifiable Social Security number. "The 760,000 accounts that we terminated, we took out because the American taxpayers should not be paying fraudulent brokers to lie about people who don't exist, collect premiums and run away with the money," Oz added.

This crackdown is part of a broader effort to combat fraud within federal health benefits programs. Earlier reports highlighted annual healthcare fraud losses potentially reaching $521 billion. In related efforts, the Treasury Department has begun issuing $500 refund checks to approximately 1 million Americans, accompanied by a letter from President Donald Trump criticizing the Biden administration's handling of HealthCare.gov funding.

"I'm trying to make sure you had a real discussion to explain the policies and truly tried your best to get the right people in the right programs," Oz said regarding the administration's new approach. "Otherwise, we have massive corporate fraud."
