Siblings Bill and Alison Chawke, heirs to a prominent Irish pub empire, have been sentenced to prison for a violent, unprovoked assault on two men. The incident occurred on November 9, 2023, after the pair had been drinking heavily in Adare.

According to evidence presented in Limerick Circuit Criminal Court, Bill, 31, and Alison, 41, consumed approximately 15 alcoholic drinks before entering the residents' bar at the Dunraven Arms Hotel. CCTV footage showed Bill initiating a physical altercation after being asked by the victims, Gerard Cox and John McHugh, to stop pestering hotel staff. The violence escalated when Alison began recording the men on her phone. As the fight moved into the hotel foyer, she bit John McHugh on the cheek and kicked him while Bill wrestled him to the ground. Alison also threw a pint glass during the melee.

Both victims sustained lasting physical and psychological injuries. Judge Fiona O’Sullivan described the attack as unprovoked and noted its ferocity. She deemed Bill the primary instigator, while acknowledging Alison had initially attempted to de-escalate the situation before becoming involved herself.

Both Chawkes pleaded guilty, had no prior convictions, and had made €5,000 payments to each victim as a gesture of remorse. Despite these efforts and an undisclosed out-of-court settlement, the court imposed custodial sentences.

Bill received a headline sentence of three-and-a-half years, reduced to two years and six months, with the final 12 months suspended. Alison was given a headline sentence of three years and two months, reduced to two years and two months, with 14 months suspended. Both posted €1,000 bail bonds, and Bill is reported to be serving his sentence in Limerick prison. Alison is incarcerated in the county's female prison.

The siblings come from a family known for its publican businesses, including Searsons Inns Ltd and Lena Chawke Ltd. Bill had received a significant shareholding in his father's pub empire in 2015, while Alison joined the boards of family companies in her mid-20s. Their father is a well-known publican in Dublin and Adare, Co. Limerick.

Sources close to the siblings described them as fixtures of the Dublin social scene in their youth. Bill, who holds a Harvard business degree, recently held a lavish wedding in Spain, which some believe may have negatively impacted perceptions of their remorse. Alison, described as having been 'pretty wild in her youth' but having 'calmed down in recent years,' is a mother of three.

Some observers have suggested that the sentences may have been harsher due to the family's prominence, with one source noting that people felt the siblings received a tougher sentence because of their identity and that their recent public wedding did not help their cause. Despite the wealth accumulated by the family, the court determined that the severity of the assault warranted imprisonment.
