Irish Goalkeeper Refuses to Play Against Israel in Protest

Ireland's second-choice goalkeeper, Gavin Bazunu, has withdrawn from the squad for the Nations League clash against Israel, citing the "atrocities in Gaza" as his reason. Bazunu stated that his decision is not against the Israeli people or the Jewish community but is a principled stand against the killing of innocent people.

His withdrawal followed a day of significant discussion within the Irish national team. According to former Irish manager Brian Kerr, the team held a vote on whether to proceed with the match, reportedly taking place in Bazunu's absence. The vote concluded 14-8 in favor of playing the fixture, though the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has not confirmed these figures.

Kerr has also been critical of the FAI's handling of the situation, calling for the board's resignation and accusing them of "collaborating" in Israeli sportswashing.

Bazunu shared his decision on Instagram, emphasizing the importance of representing his country and expressing respect for his teammates, manager, and the Irish people. He stated, "I am a man of strong faith and try my best to be a person of character and principle, therefore I feel it would be wrong to participate in the upcoming fixtures against Israel."

A source close to Bazunu indicated that his family is proud of his courage in standing up for his beliefs.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson had previously commented on the conflict, remarking that his team was "playing against genocide" amid Israel's actions in Palestine, where a significant number of casualties have been reported since the war in Gaza began. Hallgrimsson's remarks drew criticism from Israeli officials. The controversy has also seen a petition signed by over 17,000 people calling for the game to be scrapped.
