Irish Goalkeeper Refuses to Play Against Israel Amidst 'Genocide' Controversy

Back-up goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has reportedly informed the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) that he will not play in the upcoming Nations League match against Israel, throwing the fixture into doubt.

The decision comes after Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson made controversial remarks stating his team would be "playing against genocide" in relation to Israel's actions in Palestine. These comments have drawn sharp criticism from Israeli officials and amplified calls for the game, scheduled to be held in Debrecen, Hungary, to be cancelled.

A petition opposing the match has garnered over 17,000 signatures. Bazunu's reported refusal to play, communicated to the FAI on Saturday morning, has led to a delay in training. More players may follow suit, according to reports.

Hallgrimsson's initial statement, made last weekend, ignited a strong response from the Israeli FA, which posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday night. They criticized the Irish coach's use of the word 'genocide,' stating, "We're not playing with ignorance, hypocrisy and stupidity, we're playing against the coach who embodies them."

Ireland is scheduled to play Israel twice during this international break, with both matches designated as neutral venues. This controversy adds to a tense atmosphere surrounding the fixtures.

Separately, Israel's player Sayed Abu Farchi received a red card in their recent 3-1 Nations League loss to Austria. He was sent off in the second half after mimicking a gunshot with the corner flag, an action that drew criticism for being in poor taste. Manager Ran Ben-Shimon defended the player, stating it was a habitual celebration that had not previously resulted in a booking. However, UEFA rules suggest a player can be booked for "gesturing or acting in a provocative, derisory or inflammatory way," with removing a corner flag also being a yellow card offense.
