Ireland Mourns Family Lost in 'Evil' Arson Attack, Suspects Charged

Thousands of mourners gathered in Waterford, Ireland, on Monday for the funeral of Philip and Kim English and their two sons, Callum, 12, and Jayden, 9, who died in an arson attack on their home.

Two other children, aged six and 14, remain in critical condition in hospital following the incident, which was reported early Tuesday morning at the Birchwood Estate property. Authorities are investigating the attack as an 'act of evil' and believe it is connected to drug debt intimidation.

A man and a woman have been charged in connection with the incident. Cian Stacey, 21, and Jessica Dalton, 31, appeared at Clonmel District Court on Saturday, facing charges of criminal damage and assault causing serious harm. Both were remanded in custody.

The funeral Mass was held at the Sacred Heart Church, where hundreds gathered and thousands more watched online. Parish priest Father Gerry Chestnutt described the event as a day of "unbelievable grief and sadness" for the family, community, and the nation. He stated that a "force of darkness organised, came in the dark and devastated a family, taking away four innocent lives."

During the service, the white coffins of Callum and Jayden were placed alongside those of their parents. Bishop Alphonsus Cullinan of Waterford and Lismore called the scene "heart-wrenching" and spoke of innocent lives destroyed by the drug trade, urging those involved to consider the consequences of their actions.

Family members also paid tribute. Kim's sister described Kim and Philip's unconditional love for each other and her nephews as "beautiful boys." Philip's cousin appealed to young people to reject drugs and seek help if they have been led down a harmful path, emphasizing the importance of choosing life and hope.

First responders were acknowledged for their efforts to save the family. Tributes highlighted Philip English's smiling demeanor and caring nature, Kim's vocal and feisty personality, Callum's mischievous spirit, and Jayden's boundless energy and love for life.

Political figures including representatives for the President, Taoiseach, and Tánaiste, as well as the Sinn Féin leader, were in attendance.
