Ireland Holds Funeral for Family of Four Killed in Suspected Arson Attack

The bodies of Philip and Kim English and their two sons, Callum, 12, and Jayden, nine, who died in a suspected arson attack on their Waterford home, have arrived at Sacred Heart Church for their funeral. The tragedy has left the city in mourning, with hundreds gathering for vigils.

The family members will lie in repose before their funeral Mass on Monday afternoon, followed by interment at Kilbarry Cemetery. Four separate hearses carried the victims' bodies to the church on Sunday.

Players from Johnville Football Club, where Callum was a member, formed a guard of honour on the church steps. The club announced that Callum's number five shirt would be permanently retired in his memory.

Meanwhile, two other children who survived the blaze, a 14-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy, remain in serious condition at Children's Health Ireland in Crumlin, Dublin. Their aunt, Jackie English, stated that the teenage girl is showing signs of improvement, but her younger brother is still in critical condition.

The deadly blaze reportedly broke out shortly after 5 a.m. on Tuesday, with investigators believing an incendiary device was used. Authorities suspect the attack may be linked to intimidation involving a drugs gang, though the family was not believed to be involved in criminal activity.

Two individuals, Cian Stacey, 21, and Jessica Dalton, 31, have appeared in court charged with criminal damage and assault causing serious harm. They were remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear before Waterford District Court.

Local councillor Seamus Ryan described the event as an "horrific tragedy, an unprecedented tragedy for the family, for the people of Waterford." He also praised the support from the local priest and the emergency services.

Tributes have poured in for the victims. Kim's sister, Charlene Companjen, remembered her as "the light of my life" and a "best mother." She described Callum as "such a bright boy" and Jayden as "always up to trouble," fondly recalling their time together.

Jayden, who was born with a heart condition, had undergone surgery just two weeks prior to the fire. He was known as a "heart warrior" and regularly traveled to Dublin for medical appointments with the help of the BUMBLEance children's ambulance service.

Philip was remembered as an "amazing father." The family has requested that donations be made to Crumlin Children's Hospital in lieu of flowers.

Gardaí are continuing their investigation and have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. Ireland's Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly has stated that detectives have been provided with all necessary resources, and further arrests are anticipated.
