Iraqi security forces arrested seven political officials, including five members of Parliament, on corruption charges early Sunday. The arrests occurred following raids within the Green Zone, the heavily fortified area of Baghdad that houses government institutions and foreign embassies. Security forces sealed all entrances to the zone during the operation.
The arrests were reportedly based on statements made by Adnan al-Jumaili, a former Deputy Minister of Oil who was taken into custody last month. Several of those arrested were affiliated with the political bloc of former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. The specific accusations against the detained individuals have not yet been disclosed.
Al-Sudani's bloc secured the largest number of seats in the November parliamentary elections. However, a political deadlock within the Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shiite parties allied with Iran, prevented him from becoming prime minister. The position was ultimately filled by Ali al-Zaidi, a businessman and political newcomer who emerged as a consensus candidate with U.S. approval.
The arrests are expected to have repercussions throughout Iraq's complex political landscape, where corruption allegations often intertwine with power struggles.
