Iranian Woman Sentenced to Death Appeals for Help from Prison

An Iranian accounting student, Najmeh Amini, 23, has issued a desperate appeal for help from inside Vakilabad Prison, where she faces execution following her participation in anti-regime protests. Amini was sentenced to death last week after being detained for eight months on charges including "insulting the Supreme Leader" and "clashing with security agents," according to the Iran Human Rights Monitor (IHRM).

A leaked voice recording from the prison captures Amini pleading for her case to be reviewed and for international attention. "I am not trying to make a hero out of myself today; I only ask one thing: be my voice. I am an innocent girl, a young person with so many hopes and dreams," she states in the recording. She implores lawyers, legal scholars, human rights activists, and international organizations, including the United Nations, to investigate her case.

Amini was arrested on January 31, amidst widespread protests against the Iranian government. Human rights groups report that the subsequent crackdown led to over 7,000 deaths and thousands of arrests. Detainees have reportedly spent months in limbo awaiting court decisions.

The IHRM stated that issuing a death sentence against a 23-year-old student after months of detention, allegations of torture, and denial of counsel heightens the urgency for international intervention. Amini's sentence follows the recent public executions of two men convicted of killing police officers during the protests.

Amnesty International has condemned the executions, labeling them an "escalation in the authorities' use of the death penalty to crush dissent." The organization reported that at least 60 individuals, including minors, are at risk of execution. According to Amnesty, at least 26 people have been arbitrarily executed following trials described as "torture-tainted, grossly unfair," while another 26 have been executed this year on politically motivated charges.

The protests, initially triggered by economic hardship, evolved into calls for the overthrow of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. HRANA reports that over 7,000 people were killed during the unrest, with the government acknowledging more than 3,000 fatalities. The crackdown has been described as the deadliest in the Islamic Republic's 47-year history.
