Iranian Prosecutors Open Criminal Case Over Onstage Embrace

Iranian prosecutors have initiated a criminal investigation into a theater company following the circulation of a video showing an actress resting her head on an actor's chest during a performance. Authorities have deemed the interaction a violation of the country's "social norms."

The play, titled "Tehran Paris Tehran," depicts the story of a young woman seeking revenge for her father's murder. The controversial scene features lead actress Fatemeh Masoudifar leaning her head towards co-star Mehrdad Sedighian, who appears to place his hand over her head.

Public physical contact between unrelated men and women is prohibited in Iran, a rule that extends to theatrical performances. However, the production company has stated that the cellphone video, filmed from a narrow angle, was misleading and did not accurately represent the distance between the actors on stage at Tehran’s Book Garden.

Furthermore, the company asserted that the characters portrayed by Masoudifar and Sedighian are siblings. According to Islamic law, physical contact between family members is permissible. The embrace, they explained, occurred during a moment of crisis within the play's narrative.

This case is the latest in a series of legal actions taken against Iranian artists for alleged breaches of the country's religious laws. Earlier this week, an appeals court in Qom upheld convictions against singer Parastoo Ahmadi and seven other musicians. They were sentenced to 74 lashes and banned from performing and traveling for two years following a December 2024 YouTube concert where Ahmadi performed without wearing a hijab.
