A small power plant in the United Kingdom was shut down for four days last month due to a cyberattack attributed to hackers affiliated with the Iranian regime. The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) stated that at no point was there a risk to the UK's overall energy system.
The incident involved a small-scale generator, and officials have withheld specific details about the affected site for security reasons. The National Cyber Security Centre, which monitors threats to critical infrastructure, did not provide further information.
According to reports, the attack targeted a facility that provides short-term power to the UK's energy network when demand is high. The government is in the process of updating its cybersecurity regulations and developing a new energy resilience strategy, expected later this year, to address such threats. Iran is recognized as a significant cyber power, and while global cybersecurity sectors have been anticipating potential state-sponsored or state-linked attacks following recent international conflicts, significant activity has been limited until now.
