Iran's President Vows Defiance Against US Pressure, Seeks Diplomatic Solution

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian declared to the UN General Assembly that the nation will never "never bend the knee" amid ongoing conflict and pressure, while simultaneously expressing openness to a diplomatic resolution. His remarks come in response to threats from US President Donald Trump to "annihilate" the Islamic Republic if a deal is not reached.

Pezeshkian stated that Iranian resistance would intensify in the face of sanctions and increased pressure. He also insisted that any agreement must include an end to the US blockade of Iranian ships and ports, arguing that Iran should not be denied access to the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil and gas shipments. The Strait has been effectively closed since late February due to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels and the US blockade.

An earlier preliminary agreement in June to end the war and reopen the Strait collapsed weeks later when Iranian attacks resumed and the US reinstated its blockade. On Tuesday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff engaged in indirect talks, brokered by Qatari mediators, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Witkoff expressed hope that these discussions, the first since June, would be constructive. However, Iran's foreign ministry spokesman characterized the talks as "not anything new," reiterating Iran's conditions, which include the cessation of the US blockade and the release of frozen Iranian assets.
