Iranian authorities announced Sunday the execution of a man convicted of killing a member of the security forces during the 2022 nationwide protests. The demonstrations began after the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, in the custody of the country's morality police.
Authorities stated that the fatal shooting occurred during unrest in Tehran, a period marked by road blockades and clashes between protesters and security forces. The convicted individual, identified as Aref Khoshkar, was reportedly armed with a pellet gun and fired at security personnel, wounding Salman Amirahmadi, who later died. According to official accounts, Khoshkar confessed to firing the weapon from a rooftop and subsequently discarding it in a trash bin.
This execution marks the latest in a series of reported capital punishments linked to the 2022 protests. The unrest spread across the country following Amini's death, which was attributed to alleged violations of Iran's strict dress code.
Rights groups have raised concerns regarding the judicial processes for cases involving the deaths of security forces during the protests, citing instances where defendants were allegedly denied due process.
