Iran Claims Mines Detonated on 3 Ships in Strait of Hormuz

Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed that three fuel ships, including a supertanker carrying over 2 million barrels of oil, exploded Friday after striking naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. According to the Guard's navy, the supertanker hit a mine while traversing an unauthorized route, and two other vessels exploded after disabling their navigation signals and disregarding radio warnings.

Details regarding the origin of the ships, the identities of their crews, or who may have laid the mines were not provided by Iran. The claims could not be independently verified, and the U.S. stated it had cleared all primary transit routes in the strait of mines.

This reported incident occurred as Saudi Arabia announced it had intercepted a drone launched by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels near Mecca. The Houthis have denied involvement in any attempt to target the holy site.

In the wake of these events, oil prices saw a significant increase Friday, reaching their highest point since late April. Analysts suggest that upcoming elections in Israel and the U.S. midterm elections on November 3rd could contribute to further volatility in the oil market. While forecasting is difficult, crude oil prices are expected to remain elevated, trading within a range of $70 to $90 per barrel, even after the current conflicts subside, a notable increase from the $60 to $70 range observed before recent escalations. Continued activity in the Strait of Hormuz, coupled with doubts about diplomatic resolutions, is contributing to elevated oil prices and expectations of further conflict.
