Iran Adopts New Strait of Hormuz Tactics to Influence U.S. Midterm Elections

Iran is employing new tactics in the Strait of Hormuz with the stated goal of influencing the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, according to two senior Iranian officials. The Islamic Republic seeks to humiliate President Donald Trump and ensure his party's defeat in the November elections by attempting to keep oil prices elevated.

Tehran has asserted control over the vital waterway, which previously carried approximately one-fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas trade, since U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran began on February 28. The officials indicated that Iran began implementing different offensive tactics against vessels deemed in violation of its restrictions about ten days ago, leading to an increase in attacks. This new strategy involves changes in both the type and pace of attacks, with a key objective being to affect the outcome of the U.S. elections.

"The aim is to frustrate efforts by the United States and its allies to bring down global oil prices," one official told Reuters. The decision to implement this new strategy was reportedly made at the highest levels of Iran's leadership and was coordinated across the country's ruling system.

A U.S. military official confirmed that Iran has altered its tactics. Following U.S. destruction of much of Iran's radar capabilities, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has begun using unarmed spotters in small boats to identify potential targets, including U.S. naval vessels. In a previously undisclosed incident last week, U.S. forces destroyed a dhow from which Iranian spotters were operating and relaying target information to the IRGC. No casualties were reported in that confrontation.

The war, with its estimated $3 billion monthly cost, has become a significant issue in the campaign for the November midterm elections, which will determine control of Congress. President Trump has been considering further actions against Iran but has stated he will not launch additional attacks before the vote. The U.S. has also maintained a naval blockade of Iranian ports and extended sanctions in an effort to pressure Tehran into a de-escalation of the conflict.

The ongoing standoff in the Strait of Hormuz continues to expose global energy markets to potential disruptions. Attacks on commercial ships transiting the strait have recently surged to their highest level since the war began, according to independent data. Over the past 48 hours, at least five incidents involving tankers and other commercial vessels have been reported in the vicinity of Hormuz, including drone strikes. This rate of activity is comparable to incidents between October 3-5, suggesting a new escalation, according to the International Maritime Organization.

"There is a tempo increase in strikes, which looks deliberate," one maritime security source commented.

Iranian officials also stated that Tehran plans to expand the operational area beyond the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman and more distant waters. Analysis of reported attacks suggests this may already be occurring, with Iran targeting ships off the coasts of Qatar and the United Arab Emirates in recent days. The second Iranian official emphasized that Tehran would not permit President Trump to lower oil prices before the elections, describing the situation as a "game of chess."

Both Iranian officials indicated that Tehran is moving towards a complete closure of the strait for any vessel violating its restrictions. The U.S. Navy-led Joint Maritime Information Center reported that the threat to merchant shipping in the Strait of Hormuz remains "severe," with continued IRGC activities including UAV overflights, surveillance, and communications attempts.
