Iran Accused of Attempting to Interfere in U.S. Midterm Elections

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has been accused of attempting to meddle in the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. The elite military force reportedly issued a 26-page letter to American voters calling for the removal of Donald Trump's allies from office, branding them as "evil, deceitful, and violent."

The letter, published just five weeks before Americans head to the polls, blames these politicians for the current state of the country and warns that "the world has changed."

This alleged interference comes shortly after Trump rejected Iran's latest proposal to revive a ceasefire in a conflict that has been ongoing for eight months. The proposed plan would have involved the U.S. lifting its blockade of Iranian ports and Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. Mediators have indicated that Iran has received a U.S. response, but disagreements persist regarding the sequence of actions.

The Strait of Hormuz, which previously handled a significant portion of the world's oil, has experienced severely choked traffic since the war began, contributing to a surge in global energy prices. This rise in fuel costs, with the national average for a gallon of regular gas at $4.43, has led to concerns among Republican insiders that the economic fallout from the war could jeopardize their majorities in the House and Senate.

Recent polling data suggests the war is broadly unpopular, and Trump's approval ratings have reportedly reached their lowest point during his presidency. Trump, however, has expressed confidence that the conflict will conclude soon with Iran's eventual surrender, stating that Tehran is in a weak position.

Negotiations have been stalled for months, with the White House demanding Iran relinquish its enriched uranium stockpile and suspend its nuclear program. Tehran, in turn, seeks control of the Strait of Hormuz as reparations for damages incurred during the conflict.

The alleged Iranian meddling attempt surfaced the day after the final U.S. troops withdrew from neighboring Iraq, an event hailed by Tehran and its allied militias as a victory over the United States. Since President Trump initiated "Operation Epic Fury" in February, eighteen U.S. service members have been killed. Despite Iran facing its own economic crisis, the regime has continued its regional actions and efforts to disrupt shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
