iPhone Duos Resell for Up To $10,000 as Demand Outstrips Supply
Apple's new foldable device sells out within hours of launch, prompting significant price markups on resale sites.
Apple's highly anticipated iPhone Duo has sold out within hours of its release, with resellers listing the devices for up to $10,000 online. The foldable phone went on sale Friday, October 23, sparking a rush among consumers eager to be among the first to own the new technology.
Long lines formed outside Apple stores even before opening on launch day. At the company's Fifth Avenue store in New York City, a significant queue was observed as early as 4:15 a.m. By 10 a.m., the store reportedly had no units available for walk-in purchases, with remaining stock allocated to pre-orders.
Similar scenes unfolded at other locations. At the World Trade Center store, employees began taking orders at 6 a.m., by which time approximately 200 people were already waiting. This high demand has led to immediate scarcity, driving prices on resale platforms.
Online marketplaces like eBay and Craigslist quickly featured listings for the iPhone Duo at substantially inflated prices. One eBay listing offered a 2TB iPhone Duo in Night Sky for $8,000, while another sought $10,000 for the same model, significantly exceeding the original retail price of $3,199. Craigslist also saw listings in the range of $7,999.
One reseller noted the effort involved in obtaining the device, stating they were willing to negotiate the price and expressing a desire for others to experience the new technology. Despite the high resale costs, some buyers have still purchased these marked-up devices. One eBay transaction involved a 1TB Star White model sold with overnight shipping for $5,200.
This is not the first instance of extreme resale pricing for the iPhone Duo. When preorders initially opened on October 16, the device also sold out rapidly, leading to backorders pushing delivery dates into January 2027 for some customers. A 2TB iteration was also resold on eBay for close to $10,000 on the same day preorders began.
The iPhone Duo features a 7.6-inch inner screen and a 5.4-inch outer screen. Despite its dual-display capabilities, the device weighs just over half a pound and folds down to a compact size. Analysts suggest that Apple's entry into the foldable phone market could significantly boost the mainstream adoption of this technology, mirroring its impact on categories like smartwatches and earbuds.
