Iowa Senate Race Heats Up Amid Accusations of Shadow Lobbying and Misused Funds

During a heated debate Wednesday, Iowa Republican Senate candidate Ashley Hinson vehemently denied allegations that her husband, Matt Arenholz, operates as a "shadow lobbyist." Her Democratic opponent, Josh Turek, also accused Hinson of taking $50,000 in taxpayer funds for housing, despite her multi-million dollar wealth, which he characterized as "corruption."

Hinson, a current Congresswoman, responded that her husband is an insurance agent who works from home. She stated that the $50,000 in question represents a congressional per-diem housing reimbursement program available to all members, which she has only utilized for "days in session" over her six years in Congress. The annual cap for this program is $34,000.

"I think it's important to note that my opponent, who did not show up to work, still took the full per diem here in Iowa, the same program that exists for lawmakers here," Hinson retorted, challenging Turek to return the money. She also noted that her husband "built a successful business that he sold in 2021."

The Washington Sun previously reported that Hinson and Arenholz have strong ties to the insurance industry, with Arenholz having held a position at a prominent industry lobbying group while Hinson served in Washington. Turek claimed Hinson spent the taxpayer funds on a luxury apartment in Washington D.C.

The race for Iowa's open Senate seat is considered a toss-up by the Cook Political Report. A recent CNN/SSRS poll showed Hinson leading Turek 45% to 43%, though other polls have shown Turek with a narrow advantage. Hinson has previously led in polls from The New York Times/Siena University and Quantus Insights.

Turek secured his party's nomination with support from prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama. He has emphasized his bipartisan work in the Iowa Legislature, stating he voted with Republicans over 700 times and was proud of it. Hinson also highlighted her own bipartisan efforts, noting she is among the top 20 percent of bipartisan lawmakers in Congress and has had legislation signed into law by President Joe Biden.

Hinson is seeking a U.S. Senate seat after three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Turek is a two-term member of Iowa's state legislature. The incumbent, Senator Joni Ernst, is not seeking re-election. While Iowa leans Republican, Hinson's success could be influenced by the performance of Democrat Rob Sand in the gubernatorial race.
