An Iowa Democrat who withdrew from his state House campaign in September due to health reasons has won his election, defeating Republican Keith Jones. Eric Armstrong secured 4,602 votes to Jones' 3,737, according to unofficial results.
Armstrong announced his withdrawal on Facebook, stating that he needed to prioritize his health and recovery. "Running a successful campaign requires immense physical and mental energy. Recently, I have been facing some personal health issues that require my full attention and immediate care," he wrote. He added that the district "deserves a representative who can give 100 percent of their energy to this race."
Despite his withdrawal, Armstrong's name remained on the ballot, and voters elected him to the Iowa House District 20 seat. Armstrong told The New York Times that he would do his best to represent the district but continues to struggle with his health. He did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
Jones, a member of the Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors, expressed concern over the outcome. "Being a member of the Iowa House is highly exhausting — 14-hour days away from home. Is he healthy enough for the job?" Jones asked in a statement to Fox News Digital. "He is now a public figure. We should know what his ailment was. If he wasn't truly sick and quit the race, is he committed enough to represent our district? I think we deserve to know more."
